Mindset has sort of acted as a Spiral Beach fanblog lately. I’m okay with that. We didn’t end up getting into that 19+ show, but we did chat for a long while with Dorian Wolf, the bassist (top middle). He’s a really cool guy and seemed genuinely upset that we weren’t allowed to stay. He also remembered my and Emerson’s duck, which we got the band to sign at NXNE (“Airick sucks dick”), and also remembered Christina because she jumped on the stage during Black Lips. So basically he remembered us all, albeit with encouragement.
So we got talking, and apparently Dorian actually went to the University of Waterloo, but hasn’t got a degree or anything yet so he technically still goes there. And re: Charlie Bartlett, the band knew a bunch of people in it, like Jake Epstein of The Zack Files and Degrassi: The Next Generation.
I think that’s pretty much it. I mean, I bought a Spiral Beach pin, which was totally worth $1. And then Christina and I created a half-baked fantasy involving the members of Spiral Beach and using the Perimeter Institute as a porn studio… but there’s no need for details. After we were done our Dorian Wolf swooning, we went to a house gig where this band from Montreal called J’Envoie were playing. That was really good too. This all happened last night, by the way. Tonight I went to Emerson’s parent’s 50th birthday, which sounds way more awkward than it actually was. It was pretty much a backyard full of drunk relatives setting off fireworks… so yeah, it was awesome.
And then tomorrow: Pride parade and festivities in Toronto with Rachel, and a joint birthday party for Dan and Lee that will involve a bouncy castle. Fun will inevitably occur. Should be a really good end to a great first ~week of summer, and I hope all of you guys are having a good weekend as well.

So, now I’ve seen Kabluey. I liked it a lot. More Chris Parnell would have been nice, but there was a shitload of Lisa Kudrow so I’m satisfied.
Now I’m off to crash a 19+ Spiral Beach concert. No, we probably won’t be let in, but if we’re lucky we’ll be able to get inside to buy a CD… and then, of course, completely take advantage of the situation and stay there. If that doesn’t pan out, there’s always 5 seasons of Weeds waiting to be watched, and it’s about time I got on that.
Happy Friday!

Spiral Beach in Charlie Bartlett — you know you’ve made it when Anton Yelchin is dancing to your music.

Just finished listening to Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix by Phoenix and Living Thing by Peter Bjorn & John. They’re both amazing and I wouldn’t be surprised seeing them in every top 10 albums list this December. Anyway, weird Canadian weather is happening right now so I’m going to stay inside and watch Charlie Bartlett. Anton Yelchin is in it, as are Spiral Beach — both musically and physically. So it can’t be bad, right? We’ll see. Edit: Just finished watching it. One of my favourite movies.

So Spiral Beach are playing a show at Maxwell’s Music House (Waterloo, Ontario) this Friday at 8pm. It’s five minutes away from my house — and 19+.

Black Lips live at NXNE (Yonge-Dundas Square) last night.
Not really my cup of tea musically, but the concert was crazy. People were jumping on the stage to dance with the Lips, and as the security guards started running to pull them off, the band stood in front of them so people could stay on the stage. Then of course there was the usual beer throwing and crowd-surfing. Someone threw a wax figure of a duck at us so we used it to get the signatures of everyone* in Spiral Beach, who had just played. Maddy said it was the best thing that happened to her all day. Whether or not that was an exaggeration… well, it wasn’t. I was involved with the best thing to happen to Maddy of Spiral Beach all day, period.
Despite exams getting in the way of the Arts & Crafts showcase and a bunch of other free NXNE shows for me, my life still pretty much rocks right now. Summer, you are so close.
*Everyone but Airick. His brother signed it for us (“I’ll sign it, I used to wrestle with him”) as “Airick sucks dick”. Success.

I'M ABOUT TO FINISH MY HISTORY ESSAY LOLOLOL

but then I have a civics project and a sustainable living project due by the end of the week. Oh, and exams start next Thursday, with my last one (of 4 in total) on the following Tuesday.

On the bright side: Luminato is going to kick ass this weekend (you wouldn’t understand, it’s a Toronto thing), and Black Lips + Spiral Beach as part of NXNE is going to be even better. That’s next Thursday, which is also the day of my first two exams. Don’t look at me like that, I’m responsible. Seriously. I’m serious.

All of this is my excuse for not being on tumblr very often anymore, by the way. Also, I’ve discovered the secret to Tumblarity: not using tumblr for a couple of days makes you lose upwards of 800 points. And that’s all I’ll say about that.

My life resumes to its normal state (and by normal state I mean OH MY FUCKING GOD SUMMER) the Tuesday after next. That’s less than two weeks. Can’t. Wait.

Spiral Beach performed at a local mall today at 1pm, and I couldn’t make it thanks to school. So at 1pm, Spiral Beach rocked a mall full of octogenarians and people working at New York Fries.

Saw Spiral Beach, Born Ruffians, We Are Wolves and Islands yesterday at Hillside. INCREDIBLE. I’ve yet to hear what We Are Wolves sound like on a studio album; I get the feeling they’re best live. Islands were also really good, I’ll post a song late tonight or tomorrow.

On stage later today: Broken Social Scene and others
